These Xylay Figured Afzelia Burl Dugouts are by far the rarest of the rare! My guy says he has been going home to Laos for years gathering woods and burls, he said he only sees Afzelia with this rare figure 1 in a 1000! The figure on these pieces is unreal, when you look at it from a distance they look scaly and raised, but finish sleek like glass. These are dugouts are by far the most figured I have ever worked and are my favorite and will surely be yours.

Its color is creamy peach to golden yellow to reddish orange; with a medium to coarse texture with interlocked, irregular grain with highly distinctive curly figure.

Afzelia burl comes to us from Southeast Asia. Over the past few years, it has become increasingly difficult to obtain, especially in the burl form. High figure burl in Afzelia is now very rare! It is normal for it to have small bark inclusions.

Some of these had the small bark inclusions and voids that I filled with the finest turquoise from the Kingman Mine in Arizona!

These 4” Dugouts are a great way to pack up your tobacco, tote it, & toke on it at any good time!!! They are the standard large size, 4”Hx2”Wx3/4”T.

Afzelia xylocarpa is a tree from Southeast Asia. It grows in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Burma in deciduous forests. It can reach 30 meters tall with a trunk up to 2 meters in diameter in a mature specimen. An alternative Latin name is Pahudia cochinchinensis.

The seeds are harvest for medical purposes. The seed pulp can be used to make cigarettes, the bark and seeds are also used for herbal medicine. The highly-figured lumber is often sold as Afzelia Xylay. The wood is used for ornamental woodturning pens, knife handles, carvings, and musical instruments.
