Koa is one of Hawaii’s largest native trees and has been  called “King of the Hawaiian Woods”.

This particular Koa is over 30 years old, salvaged from way up in the mountains.

This rare wood is used for decorative furniture & artwork for its absolutely unique beauty! Koa trees were mentioned often in ancient stories and songs and also provided the wood to make calabashes or “umekela’au” bowls, surf boards, weaponry, ukuleles, and canoe paddles.

Wow, these are the best Koa Dugouts I have ever made, they are full of super heavy curl, the stripes totally shine at ya, and make these some of the most beautiful you will ever see!

If you do a little searching around you will find that Koa with this much figure is really expensive and very hard to find!

Koa is a great wood to work, its dense but not that dense, it takes a finish really well and is so sleek in your hands.

The koa population has suffered from gazing and logging. Many wet forest areas, where the largest koa grow, have been logged out, and it now comes largely from dead or dying trees or farms on private lands. Although formerly used for outrigger canoes, there are few koa remaining which are both large and straight enough to do so today. In areas where cattle are present, koa regeneration is almost completely suppressed. However, if the cattle are removed, koa are among the few native Hawaiian plants able to germinate in grassland, and can be instrumental in restoring native forest. It is often possible to begin reforestation in a pasture by disk harrowing the soil, as this scarifies seeds in the soil and encourages large numbers of koa to germinate. Experiments at the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge have shown that lehua (Metrosidero polymorpha) survives best isn pasture when planted under koa. This is because koa tree reduce radiative cooling, preventing frost damage to lehua seedlings.
